The release further added that the Mizoram Police implemented several strategic measures to enhance crime prevention.
Between September 2023 and December 2024, Mizoram Police carried out an extensive anti-crime drive, arresting 3,210 individuals for a variety of offenses, said in a release of Mizoram police.
Theft and burglary accounted for 42% of the cases, while violations under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act made up 16%, and breaches of the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition (MLP) Act constituted 14%. Among those arrested, 24% were identified as habitual offenders, and 38% were drug addicts.
Demographic analysis revealed that nearly 80% of the arrested individuals were aged between 18 and 40, with half of them in the 18 to 30 age group. Women comprised 12.7% of those arrested, reflecting their involvement in certain offenses. Indian nationals accounted for 96% of the arrests, with 92% (2,833 individuals) being locals from Mizoram, while others were from Assam (158 individuals), Manipur (44), and Tripura (24). Foreign nationals, primarily from Myanmar, made up 4% of the arrests.
The police registered 341 cases under the NDPS Act, leading to the arrest of 478 individuals, including 62 Myanmar nationals. Seizures included 69.46 kg of heroin, 593.5 kg of methamphetamine tablets, 35.7 kg of crystal methamphetamine, and 305 kg of ganja. In addition, 143 vehicles used for drug transportation were confiscated. The crackdown also targeted liquor-related offenses, registering 249 cases and arresting 323 individuals. Seizures included 10,438 litres of locally made liquor, 9,861 litres of Indian-made foreign liquor, 4,552 litres of imported foreign liquor, 28,927 cans and 72 bottles of beer, and 1,542 litres of fermented rice alcohol. In operations against illegal explosives, 17 cases were registered, leading to the arrest of 27 individuals, including 4 foreign nationals. Police seized 27,188 gelatin sticks, 75,627 detonators, 1,200 plastic explosive kits, and 12,772 meters of detonating cord.
Efforts to curb economic offenses included the seizure of approximately 1,516,578 kg of smuggled dried areca nuts, valued at Rs. 16.99 crore. A total of 177 individuals were apprehended in connection with these activities. The socio-economic profile of the arrestees revealed that 61% were school dropouts, having completed education only up to 6th to 10th standards. Furthermore, 67.5% were unskilled laborers engaged in casual jobs, and 77.3% belonged to lower-income groups, underlining the link between economic vulnerability and criminal activity.
The release further added that the Mizoram Police implemented several strategic measures to enhance crime prevention. These included adopting the beat system to ensure better coverage, revising patrolling patterns to focus on high-risk periods such as church service hours, and installing CCTV cameras for improved surveillance and crime detection. Targeted action against habitual offenders, along with collaboration with local NGOs and church bodies, helped rehabilitate drug addicts, monitor school dropouts, and create awareness campaigns within communities.
The police also registered a case at West Phaileng Police Station in Mamit District to dismantle an arms smuggling network, with investigations currently underway. This comprehensive approach to law enforcement, combining strict action, community engagement, and surveillance, has contributed significantly to enhancing public safety and curbing illegal activities.
