CM Sarma highlighted that the government is committed to providing green energy to industries, harnessing renewable and solar power sources.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing over 160 Japanese business leaders at the Advantage Assam 2.0 roadshow in Tokyo on Wednesday, proposed the establishment of a Japanese Industrial Township near Jagiroad, close to the TATA semiconductor plant. This industrial hub, he stated, would symbolise innovation and manufacturing excellence.

The main Advantage Assam 2.0 summit is scheduled to be held on February 25, 2025, in Guwahati. Highlighting Assam’s focus on sustainability, CM Sarma highlighted that the government is committed to providing green energy to industries, harnessing renewable and solar power sources.

The CM shared that Assam attracted investments exceeding $4.7 billion last year. Notable projects include India’s largest semiconductor manufacturing unit by TATA Electronics, a Pepsi food processing plant, and multiple FMCG units by Hindustan Unilever, among others.

He also highlighted the ongoing Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-backed project to build the world’s longest river bridge. The 16-km bridge over the Brahmaputra at Phulbari will connect Assam and Meghalaya, serving as a vital economic corridor linking Assam with West Bengal, Chittagong, and Bangladesh. The bridge is expected to be completed in 2027, transforming regional connectivity.

Several other JICA-supported initiatives, including the Guwahati water supply project and various sewage projects, have also been launched to improve infrastructure and living standards in the state.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, northeastern states, including Assam, are witnessing unprecedented growth. CM Sarma praised initiatives like the “Uttar Poorva Transformative Industrialization Scheme 2024” (UNNATI-2024), which offers incentives to strengthen the industrial ecosystem in the region.

Assam is also set to collaborate with an Indian company to produce green aviation fuel, further establishing the state as a hub for sustainable industrial practices.

CM Sarma invited more Japanese entrepreneurs to invest in Assam, noting that while 1,500 Japanese companies currently operate in India, there is significant scope for further collaboration. He also highlighted the upcoming Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan, located just 8 km from Assam, as a promising opportunity for regional development.

According to CM Sarma, Assam is on track to triple its economy by 2025, maintaining a remarkable annual growth rate of 12.4%. With a single-window mechanism and $3 billion in production-linked incentives, Assam has become a prime destination for global investors.

Earlier, during his visit to South Korea, Sarma engaged with over 140 industry leaders, encouraging them to attend the Advantage Assam 2.0 Global Investor Summit. Similar roadshows were recently held in Bhutan, and future events are planned in Singapore, Dubai, London, and Bangkok.

The Chief Minister has also been actively promoting Assam as an emerging industrial hub. Before embarking on his international roadshows, he held a meeting in New Delhi with ambassadors from 36 countries, underscoring Assam’s growing economic potential.
