Assam CM Pitches State as Auto Hub, Discusses Clean Energy With Over 140 Industry Leaders in South Korea

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma concluded his visit to South Korea today and is now heading to Japan to continue his efforts to attract global investors for Assam.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrapped up his 3-day South Korea visit on a highly positive note as he met Oh Youngju, South Korea’s Minister for SMEs and Startups, Kyungsung Kang, President of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and over 140 top industry leaders of South Korea during his stay.

During his meeting with Oh Youngju in capital Seoul, discussion evolved around facilitating enhanced collaboration between entrepreneurs and startups of Assam.

CM Sarma’s meeting with Kyungsung Kang was about potential partnerships in trade, commerce, industry, and skill development between industries in Assam and South Korea.

During his meetings Chief Minister Sarma outlined Assam’s tourism potential and plans to create a semiconductor ecosystem to complement the upcoming OSAT unit in Jagiroad. He also stressed the state’s ambition to establish an automobile manufacturing ecosystem, offering South Korean automobile ancillary firms access to India’s $100 billion auto industry.

The Korean International Trade Association (KITA) and the Assam CM discussed how Assam can leverage its vast network to boost exports of tea, silk, and agricultural products. KITA is the country’s largest business organisation representing over 73,000 companies.

The Chief Minister held a meeting with Dr. Joon Choi, Vice President of SK hynix, a major player in the semiconductor industry, and invited the company to be part of Assam’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.

During the meeting, they spoke about the issues of the semiconductor sector. CM Sarma shared his vision of establishing Assam as a global semiconductor hub and emphasized that an enabling semiconductor ecosystem is one of the major priorities of the state government in Assam.

The Chief Minister also shared with him the Rs. 27000 crore state-of-the-art green field semiconductor unit in Assam’s Jagiroad which is expected to generate large-scale jobs of direct and indirect in the state.

Chief Minister Sarma also met the CEO of Seoul Viosys Lee Young Joo and invited him to participate in Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit and consider joining Assam’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.

He discussed Assam’s clean energy goals with Young Ha Ryu, Vice President of GS Group, focusing on the state’s target of generating 3,000 MW of clean energy by 2030.

CM Sarma also toured the Banpo Hangang River Park, Seoul’s Pangyo Techno Valley (known as South Korea’s Silicon Valley), and engaged with various stakeholders to promote collaboration in tech, biotech, and other sectors.

CM Sarma also visited the Startup Campus at Pangyo Techno Valley in Seoul known as South Korea’s Silicon Valley to see and comprehend the Startup ecosystem of South Korea.

During his visit, CM Sarma engaged with over 140 industry leaders across various sectors, inviting them to collaborate with the Assam government at the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 Global Investor Summit to be held on February 25, 2025, in Guwahati.

The Chief Minister concluded his visit to South Korea today and is now heading to Japan to continue his efforts in attracting global investors for Assam, ahead of the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit.
