BJP Announces First List of 17 Candidates for Meghalaya District Council Polls

With the announcement of its first list, the BJP has set the stage for a competitive electoral battle in Meghalaya’s autonomous councils.

With elections to the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Councils in Meghalaya set for 21 February, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its first list of candidates. The party has finalised 14 candidates for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and three for the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

State BJP Vice President Khrawboklang Basaiawmoit released the names of the candidates. For the KHADC, notable nominations include Himanta Timung for Jirang, Manin Raja for Nongpoh, Hopingstone Marsharing for Mawhati, and Brighstarfield Khongwir for Umsning. Other key candidates include Elvisstar Kharbudon (Langkyrdem-Laitkroh), Councellor Mukhim (Mawkynrew), Ebren Khongthah (Nongshken), and Daniella Nonglait (Mawlai).

In the JHADC, Heimonmitre Phawa will contest from Jowai South, Manbha Lyngdoh from Muthlong Sohkympor, and Shanbor Rymbai from Musniang Rangad.

BJP State General Secretary Wankitbok Pohshna expressed optimism about the party’s prospects, stating, “We are confident in our candidates and expect a strong performance in the upcoming elections.”
