Guwahati: Notorious Thief Shot by Police For Trying to Flee from Police Custody

A wanted criminal was injured in a police firing when he allegedly attempted to flee from custody at Garbhanga in Guwahati on Monday night.
The injured accused has been identified as Joydev Mazumdar, a resident of Birubari.
As per inputs, the accused tried to flee from police custody by snatching a police officer’s pistol but was shot at by the alert cops.
The accused is involved in several cases of mobile phone thefts and chain snatching. The incident occurred when the accused was taken for crime scene recreation.
While speaking to media, a City police personnel said, “As part of our operation, we had taken Joydev Mazumdar to Garbhanga Pahar when he abruptly acted queasy and moved aside. Taking advantage of the situation, he snatched a pistol from one of our officers. In self-defense, we had to shoot him in the leg.”
“Over 55-60 burglary and theft cases registered against him,” the police stated.
Currently, the accused was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, and his condition is stable.
In the same operation, five other burglars were also apprehended.
Further investigation is underway.
