Bananas are know to be loaded with vitamins and good for health. But are the bananas you are eating safe? In a shocking case of food adulteration, Manipur police on Thursday arrested two individuals in connection with a viral video doing the rounds on social media which showed them allegedly using harmful chemicals to ripen bananas. The incident was reported at Naga Nala, Thangal Bazar in Imphal.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Merai Ibecha Begum (66) and Md. Maniruddin (40), residents of Imphal East.

The incident came to light after the viral video exposed their actions, triggering public outrage.

According to a police statement, the video, posted on Facebook on January 15, 2025, showed a man and a woman dipping green bananas in a suspicious liquid before selling them at Naga Nala, Thangal Bazar.
‘’Following the video, Manipur Police acted swiftly and detained the two persons, namely (1) Merai Ibecha Begum (66) and (2) Md. Maniruddin (40), who admitted to using chemicals supplied by an unknown woman to ripen the bananas,” Manipur police stated.

“Both were presented before the Executive Magistrate and bound under appropriate legal sections. Further efforts are ongoing to identify the supplier,” police said.

“A public awareness campaign on the dangers of such practices has been launched in Khwairamband market areas, and citizens are urged to report any similar activities to the concerned authorities,” police further added.

Meanwhile, authorities are actively working to identify the chemical supplier and have launched an awareness campaign in Khwairamband Keithel to educate the public on the health risks of chemically treated food.

As a gesture of appreciation, Manipur police felicitated two women for exposing the fraudulent artificial banana ripening operation.
