In a landmark decision on January 15, the Arunachal Pradesh Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, approved several transformative initiatives including the establishment of a 100-seat Medical College and a 420-bedded hospital in Namsai.

The Cabinet has recommended to the Centre the establishment of a 100-seat Medical College and a 420-bedded hospital in Namsai. The project, planned under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, is estimated to cost Rs. 375 crore. This medical institution aims to significantly improve healthcare access and boost medical education in the state.

The Cabinet approved State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) reimbursement for large hydroelectric projects implemented through joint ventures between the state government and Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs). Key approvals include:

  • Tato II Hydroelectric Project (700 MW) in Shi Yomi District.
  • Kamala Hydroelectric Project (1,720 MW) in Kamle District.

These projects, with a combined investment of approximately Rs. 35,000 crore, are expected to contribute Rs. 470 crore annually in free power and Rs. 79 crore to the Local Area Development Fund post-commissioning. The initiative will generate substantial employment opportunities and support India’s net-zero emission goals.

The Cabinet approved the Arunachal Pradesh Policy for Restoration of Terminated Large Hydropower Projects under Special Circumstances, 2025. This policy aims to revive stalled projects, ensuring the optimal utilization of the state’s hydro potential.

To improve governance and accelerate development, several key administrative measures were also approved:

  • Upgradation of 20 Junior Engineer (Civil) posts to Assistant Surveyor of Works (ASW) and Assistant Engineer (Civil) posts in the Department of Hydropower Development.
  • Creation of 36 new posts in the Department of Land Management, including Group A, B, and C positions.
  • Sanctioning of 32 teaching and non-teaching posts for the Government Engineering College, Tezu.

Creation of an Electrical Sub-Division in Chambang, Kurung Kumey District, were also approved by the cabinet to enhance power management. Additionally, a new PWD Division at Koloriang and a PWD Sub-Division at Damin were sanctioned to fast-track infrastructure development.

Taking on X, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said that these initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to building a prosperous and inclusive “Viksit Arunachal” while contributing to India’s larger development goals.
