Ed Sheeran Performance Row in Sikkim: CAP Questions CM’s Claims Amid Growing Debate

First Published: 13th January, 2025 17:47 IST

The initial announcement of Ed Sheeran’s potential involvement had sparked heated debates, with opposition parties accusing the government.

The controversy surrounding the proposed performance of global music icon Ed Sheeran at Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee celebrations has escalated, with fresh criticism from the opposition Citizen Action Party (CAP). The political storm was reignited following Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s recent clarification.

Speaking at the Namprikdang Namsoong Festival in Dzongu on Sunday, the Chief Minister stated that Ed Sheeran’s performance would be entirely sponsored by private entities and not funded by the state government. He emphasized that the initiative was intended to put Sikkim on the global map and boost its image as a premier destination.

However, addressing a press conference today, CAP-Sikkim spokesperson Mahesh Rai criticised the CM’s remarks. “The event could bring embarrassment to Sikkim if not executed properly, and we will not take responsibility for its failure,” Rai said. He added that the government should focus on improving essential infrastructure across the state instead of organizing such high-profile events.

The initial announcement of Ed Sheeran’s potential involvement had sparked heated debates, with opposition parties accusing the government of planning to misuse public resources. Despite the CM’s assurances, CAP has continued to question the transparency of the arrangements and the actual benefits of hosting the event.
