Friends of Dighalipukhuri Collect Over 250 Kilos of Waste; Urges Authorities to Address Safety Issues

9 weeks, over 250 kilos of waste collected from the Dighalipukhuri area, a prime location of Guwahati. The Friends of Dighalipukhuri, a group of concerned citizens conducted a clean-up drive from November 10. Students, youths, and government officials actively participated in the cleaning drive.

The concerned group of citizens have now called on the authorities to improve lighting and security at Dighalipukhuri Park, citing safety concerns during their ongoing clean-up drives. Dimly lit areas of the park have reportedly become hotspots for unlawful activities, with volunteers discovering discarded alcohol bottles, syringes, and other items.

The appeal was made during a community meet held today to mark the group’s 10th clean-up drive today.

The Friends of Dighalipukhuri installed more than 20 bamboo garbage baskets, pruned overgrown trees, and contributed 237 hours of collective effort to make the area that holds lot of cultural and historical significance for people of the city.

Indrani Das, a member of the group, remembered the historical and cultural significance of Dighalipukhuri Park, urging the need for community involvement to preserve its integrity. She reiterated the group’s commitment to maintaining the park’s beauty while urging prompt action from the authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all visitors.

“During the cleanup drive, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the Tourism Department provided full support in various ways. Everyone needs to work towards preserving the ecosystem of this area, as the park is home to many valuable species. Currently, construction for the park is underway, but people prefer a green environment over a concrete one,” said Indrani Das.
