Ahead of this meeting, the ENPO has organised a consultative meeting with the 20-member Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union (ENLU) on January 12

The second round of the tripartite meeting on the Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) involving the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), the Nagaland government, and the Centre is scheduled for January 15 in Dimapur. Advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs for Northeast Affairs, A.K. Mishra, is expected to arrive in Dimapur on January 14 to attend the meeting.

Ahead of this meeting, the ENPO has organised a consultative meeting with the 20-member Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union (ENLU) on January 12 at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur. An ENPO official informed Northeast Live that the organisation has urged all its frontal organisations, tribal bodies, and the study team to participate in the consultative meeting without fail.

It is worth mentioning that during the Nagaland state cabinet’s first meeting of the year, held on January 6, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio advised ENLU cabinet ministers to hold discussions with the ENPO ahead of the second round of talks.

The first round of talks took place on December 13, where the ENPO delegation clearly reiterated the people’s demand for a separate statehood, ‘Frontier Nagaland.’ However, the ENPO, after considering the Government of India’s challenges at this time, agreed to temporarily accept the offer of FNT, described as a unique arrangement with executive, legislative, and financial autonomy. The ENPO stated that the “significant progress” made during the first meeting encouraged all stakeholders to schedule the second tripartite meeting for mid-January to address unresolved issues.

The ENPO expressed optimism about the ongoing FNT negotiations, stating that it believes the Government of India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, will fulfill its proposed offer of FNT in the interest of the people of Eastern Nagaland. The organization also voiced confidence that Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio would honour their pre-election commitments, made ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections, to resolve the ENPO issues. These commitments included full cooperation from the Nagaland government if the BJP-Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party alliance retained power in the state.
