It has been over 102 hours now, there has been no trace of the 8 miners stuck in the Umrangso coal mine in Assam

Will the 8 miners trapped since January 6 morning 8 AM walk out alive? It has been over 102 hours, despite a massive joint rescue operation involving the Indian Army, Navy, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF, there is no trace of the 8 miners who have been trapped inside the flooded mine in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso, Assam.

Rising water levels and zero light inside the 300 feet deep mine has added to the challenges of the rescuers.

Inspector Roshan Kumar Chand, Team Commander of the NDRF said, “We have searched the vertical area but haven’t found anything. We are proceeding further with pumping out water from the mine. The water level has increased and not decreased. This is a joint operation of the Navy, NDRF, and Indian Army. The process has already started, they are using two pumps. Once the water is removed, we can go inside and do the manual search.”

Currently Coal India and ONGC too have joined the rescue operations with high-powered water pumps to suck out the water and other equipment necessary in such a crisis.

A Coal India official present at the site said, “We are procuring one pump from Nagpur which is a 500 GPM (US-made) high capacity pump. It is being airlifted. 180-meter pipes and 6-inch pipes are coming from Guwahati. Along with this, welders, electricians, and fitters from Margherita will soon reach here. “

Nine miners were stuck inside the mine. The body of Ganga Bahadur Shretha, a resident of Rampur in Nepal’s Udaypur district was recovered yesterday morning from the shaft of the mine.

The 8 miners who are still stuck inside the mine are — Krishna Pada Sarkar hailing from Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain and Mustafa Sheikh of Assam’s Darrang district in Assam, Sarpa Barman and Khushi Mohan Rai of Kokrajhar district in Assam, Lijan Magar of Dima Hasao district and Sarat Goyary, a resident of Sonitpur district in Assam.
