Manipur: Child Protection Commission Flags Alarming Rise in Suicides at Relief Camps

Members of the Commission led by Md. Habibur Rahman and Chabungbam Anita who visited the Mekola Relief Centre at Mekola Higher Secondary School where a 20-year-old woman died by suicide on January 7,assessed the living conditions of women and children at the relief camp and flagged severe issues like prolonged stay in relief camps, some living in the camps for over 19 months, has caused many residents to suffer from depression, exacerbated by insecurity, a sense of hopelessness, and the monotony of daily life in the camps.

The MCPCR highlighted the urgent need for immediate and coordinated action to address this growing crisis. They recommended implementing psychosocial support programs, providing life skills and livelihood education, and improving the overall living conditions within the camps. These measures, they stressed, are vital for safeguarding the mental health and well-being of the camp residents and preventing further loss of life.

There are approximately 58,000 number of people living in 351 relief camps of Manipur. These are the people who have been rendered homeless since violence broke out in the state on May 3, 2023.
