The letter further urged Union Minister to expedite the review process and to formally respond to the report as soon as possible.
In a significant development, the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), NEHU Unit, have requested intervention from Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan regarding serious allegations of mismanagement at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.
In a letter addressed to the Minister, the student organisations highlighted the findings of a Committee established to investigate claims of administrative failures within the university. The Committee, following an order from the Ministry on 14th November 2024, conducted a site visit where NEHUSU and KSU provided comprehensive documentation against Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.S. Shukla.
The Chairman of the Inquiry Committee subsequently issued a letter on 28th November, confirming a 15-day extension to finalise the report. As of January 4, the students’ unions expressed their concern over the lack of communication regarding the Committee’s findings.
“In light of the significant concerns raised and the urgency of the matter, we respectfully request you to take immediate action and provide a formal response to the Committee’s findings at the earliest possible date,”said the letter.
The letter further urged Union Minister to expedite the review process and to formally respond to the report as soon as possible. In their correspondence, the organisations called for the immediate removal of Prof. Shukla, citing a pattern of ineffective management that has severely impacted the university’s governance.
They described his tenure as one marked by inadequacy, which has eroded student trust and confidence. The students’ organisations firmly stated their unwillingness to comply with any directives from Prof. Shukla, emphasizing that his presence has been detrimental to the university’s academic and administrative integrity.
It should be mentioned that NEHUSU and KSU have already resolved to prevent Prof. Shukla from entering the university campus, asserting that his leadership is counterproductive to the institution’s progress.
