Sikkim, Arunachal Among Top 3 Highest Per Capita Consumer Spending States in 2023-24

Sikkim leads with a rural Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure of Rs. 9,377 and an urban MPCE of Rs. 13,927.

Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh have emerged as two of the top three states in India with the highest per capita consumer spending, alongside Goa, according to the 2023-24 Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES).

Measured by the Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE), in India during 2023-24, this survey highlights the economic vibrancy and growing spending power in these regions.

The national average MPCE in 2023-24 is Rs. 4,122 in rural areas and Rs. 6,996 in urban areas.

Sikkim leads with a rural MPCE of Rs. 9,377 and an urban MPCE of Rs. 13,927. Arunachal Pradesh follows with rural MPCE at Rs. 5,995 and urban MPCE at Rs. 9,832, showcasing the state’s economic growth. Goa rounds out the top three with rural MPCE at Rs. 8,048 and urban MPCE at Rs. 9,726.

Other Northeastern states also show notable spending patterns:
Tripura (Rural: Rs. 6,259, Urban: Rs. 8,034)
Mizoram (Rural: Rs. 5,963, Urban: Rs. 8,709)
Nagaland (Rural: Rs. 5,155, Urban: Rs. 8,022)
Manipur (Rural: Rs. 4,531, Urban: Rs. 5,945)
Meghalaya (Rural: Rs. 3,852, Urban: Rs. 7,839)
Assam (Rural: Rs. 3,793, Urban: Rs. 6,794)

At the lower end of the range, Chhattisgarh has the lowest MPCE with Rs. 2,739 in rural areas and Rs. 4,927 in urban areas.

The HCES: 2023-24 survey collected data from 2,61,953 households across India, except for a few inaccessible villages in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Pema Khandu, highlighted the state’s strong performance in the survey, emphasizing its economic growth and improved living standards.

He said that Arunachal’s rising MPCE reflects increased disposable incomes and growing consumption, driven by infrastructure development, education, and healthcare improvements.
