In a span of just 24 hours, Assam has reported a series of chilling and tragic incidents that claimed the lives of two women and one man between December 26 and the morning of December 27 in separate locations across the state.
In a horrifying attack in Guwahati’s Hatigaon area on December 26, a young woman, Mousumi Gogoi, was stabbed to death by a man in broad daylight. The assailant, identified as Bhupen Das, a cab driver from Nalbari, attacked Mousumi while she was waiting for a Rapido ride at Nahorni Path.
Mousumi, originally from Dibrugarh, had recently moved to Guwahati to work for an NGO. She was stabbed multiple times in the neck, hand, and abdomen. Locals rushed her to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), but she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving.
Bhupen, who stabbed himself after attacking Mousumi, is currently hospitalised. Police are investigating the motive behind the shocking act.
In another harrowing incident in Lahowal, Dibrugarh, a woman identified as Keshalata Hazarika was stabbed by unidentified miscreants while returning home after closing her shop.
The attackers fled with cash after the assault. Keshalata’s cries for help alerted locals, who rushed her to Assam Medical College and Hospital in critical condition. Authorities are on the lookout for the culprits, and an investigation is underway.
The morning of December 27 brought another grim discovery in Guwahati, as the bodies of a 13-year-old girl and a man were found floating in the Brahmaputra River.
The girl, identified as Juhi Das, had been missing from her residence in Garigaon since December 25. Her family alleges she was abducted by Hirakjyoti Das, a school van driver. Disturbingly, Hirakjyoti’s body was found alongside Juhi’s, deepening the mystery.
Police have retrieved CCTV footage showing Hirakjyoti and Juhi walking together on the day she disappeared. Investigators are working to uncover the events leading to their tragic deaths.
These back-to-back tragedies have left the state in shock, highlighting the urgent need for public safety measures and swift justice for the victims.
