Manipur: Job Card Holders Protest in Churachandpur Demanding Release of Pending Wages Before Christmas

Scores of people from 18 villages gathered today at the YMA Hall in Churachandpur, Manipur, demanding the urgent release of their pending labour wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme.
The protestors, who have not been paid for over 40 days of work, voiced their frustration over the delayed disbursement of funds and urged the government to release their dues ahead of Christmas, citing their financial struggles.
Hailing from poor backgrounds, the villagers stressed that they are unable to meet even the basic requirements for the upcoming festive season due to the delayed payments.
Many expressed their distress, saying they are struggling to provide for their families and purchase essentials for the Christmas celebrations.
The protestors appealed to the government for immediate action, hoping that their long-overdue wages would be released in time to bring some relief before the holidays.
Speaking to Northeast Live, H. Mangchinkhup, Chairman of the Village Council in Lamka South TD Block, expressed frustration over the villagers being deprived of their rightful wages under the MGNREGA scheme. He said that despite completing over 50 days of work, the villagers have yet to receive their payments, even after two months.
Mangchinkhup said that the district administration had confirmed the release of funds for all blocks, and the people were expecting their dues before the Christmas and New Year celebrations. However, despite submitting a memorandum to the District Commissioner of Churachandpur Dharun Kumar requesting intervention, no action has been taken, and the wages remain withheld.
“We were assured that necessary measures would be taken, but so far, neither the district administration nor the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) or Block Development Officer (BDO) has responded. Instead, they insist on organizing a social work activity,” Mangchinkhup said.
