Assam: BPF Faces Severe Fund Crunch Ahead of BTC Elections

First Published: 22nd December, 2024 19:17 IST

Despite the financial difficulties, BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary expressed confidence in his party's prospects for the upcoming elections.

The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), once a key ally of the BJP in Assam and now the main opposition in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), is grappling with a severe financial crisis ahead of the crucial 40-member Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, scheduled for early next year.

BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary said that both the party’s elected members, including Members of the Council Legislative Assembly (MCLAs) in the BTR assembly and MLAs in the Assam Assembly, are facing financial distress.

Speaking to the media, Mohilary said, “We don’t have funds. We are going through a fund crisis. Somehow, our party workers are working. We are exploring options to secure loans or financial support to keep things running.”

Despite the financial difficulties, Mohilary expressed confidence in his party’s prospects for the upcoming elections.

He firmly stated that BPF would secure an absolute majority, expecting to win more than 20 seats.

“We will contest the BTC election and win with an absolute majority. Out of the 40 seats, we will win at least 25,” he confidently stated.

Additionally, Mohilary emphasized that the BPF will contest the elections solo, without any alliances.

“We contested the Lok Sabha and Assembly by-elections alone, and this time in the BTC election, we will also go solo,” he added.

The upcoming BTC elections are seen as a crucial test for the BPF, which is battling both political challenges and financial constraints in its bid to regain power in the region.
