Arunachal’s Unique Surrendered Air Gun Museum: Tribute to Wildlife Conservation
First Published: 22nd December, 2024 12:36 IST
The initiative, led by the NES, aims to promote wildlife conservation and curb rampant hunting in the region.
A unique museum showcasing 116 surrendered air guns was inaugurated by Nyishi Elite Society (NES) General Secretary Heri Maring, in the presence of Urban Developement Minister Balo Raja, MLA Jikke Tako, and Deputy Commissioner Charu Nili on December 21 in Palin, the district headquarters of Kra Daadi district, Arunachal Pradesh.
The initiative, led by the NES, aims to promote wildlife conservation and curb rampant hunting in the region. The surrendered air guns, once used for hunting, were collected as part of a campaign by NES and the district administration. This effort has brought a significant shift in local attitudes towards protecting Arunachal Pradesh’s rich biodiversity, which includes various endangered species of birds and animals.
The campaign, which included massive awareness drives, appealed to villagers to voluntarily surrender their air guns to protect wildlife. The efforts yielded remarkable results, with 116 air guns surrendered and now displayed in the museum.
Takam Tapum, the first individual to surrender an air gun, was felicitated during the event. Tassar Tare, Gaon Bura of Tassar village, received special recognition for collecting and surrendering the highest number of air guns from villagers.
Arunachal Pradesh is renowned for its lush green cover, with over 80% of its landmass under forests. Its rich flora, fauna, and vibrant bird population attract nature lovers globally. However, unregulated hunting had drastically reduced the numbers of several species, prompting NES to launch a conservation campaign.
