Meghalaya SSA Teachers to Focus on Dialogue with Govt, Withdraw Protest Plans

MSSASA has called for an exemption from the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) for all SSA teachers appointed before July 1, 2020

The Meghalaya Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan Schools Association (MSSASA) has decided to withdraw its planned protest and focus on constructive dialogue with the state government to address the challenges faced by SSA teachers. This decision was made at a general meeting convened today to discuss critical issues surrounding the job security of SSA teachers in the state.

Previously, in October, the MSSASA issued an ultimatum to the state government, demanding the implementation of a policy to ensure the service security of SSA teachers within two months or face a potential agitation. However, during today’s meeting at the Students’ Field in Jaiaw, the association agreed to pursue a more cooperative approach.

A key proposal put forward was the formation of an empowered committee by the state government to continue discussions and develop a comprehensive policy for SSA teachers. The association suggested that this committee should include representatives from the departments of finance, planning, and education, alongside members of the MSSASA, to ensure a holistic solution.

Additionally, the MSSASA has called for an exemption from the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) for all SSA teachers appointed before July 1, 2020, arguing that these teachers should not be subjected to the MTET requirement, which was made mandatory through a government notification effective from that date.

The Meghalaya SSA Schools Association (MSSASA) president Aristotle Rymbai stated, “We have taken three decisions in today’s meeting based on the outcomes of our meeting with the honourable Chief Minister Sir Conrad K. Sangma on 28th October 2024.”

He stated, “Today, unanimously we have decided to put on hold or to withdraw the protests which we have decided on the meeting which was held on 2nd October 2024. We have also decided to continue our talk with the government to come up with a policy decision pertaining to the job security of SSE teachers in the state of Meghalaya.”

“We have decided to demand from the government to extend the exemption from clearing the Meghalaya teacher’s eligibility test for those SSE teachers who were appointed on or before the first of July 2020. We have decided to suggest the government constitute and empower a committee the members of this committee will be from the Law Department, Finance Department, Planning Department, Education Department and also the members from the association. So these are the three resolutions which we have taken today. The next meeting will be tomorrow at 11 am where we will submit the resolution which we have taken in today’s meeting,” he further stated.
