The Chief Minister called for unity against external threats and critics

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh reaffirmed his government’s commitment to securing Constitutional safeguards for the state’s indigenous communities, calling it essential for their survival. He pledged to face any consequences for actions taken to protect their identity.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Manipur Indigenous People’s Cultural Exchange Festival 2024 in Chadong Village, Kamjong District, the Chief Minister vowed to continue the government’s efforts until these safeguards are achieved.

“The indigenous people of Manipur are facing challenging times. The government will continue to struggle until we achieve Constitutional safeguards to secure our identity,” Biren Singh said.

Highlighting his administration’s initiatives, he mentioned visiting remote hill areas and allocating significant funds for the construction and preservation of key indigenous cultural sites that had previously been neglected.

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of fostering mutual understanding among communities. “At this juncture, we must know each other better. Without understanding, we cannot sustain the harmony we’ve shared since time immemorial. Before the British arrived, our ancestors defended this land with swords and spades. Today, external forces aim to disrupt our peaceful existence,” he stated.

Addressing concerns about demographic changes, Biren pointed to official data indicating a demographic imbalance in Manipur. “There are significant changes in geographical and population factors. External forces have impacted our indigenous people, who are at risk of extinction. The government is doing everything possible to safeguard them,” he asserted.

The Chief Minister called for unity against external threats and critics. “If anything I or my government does to protect indigenous communities is wrong, I am ready to face any consequence. But instead of negative criticism, let us unite to tackle these issues,” he said.

Biren also reiterated his government’s commitment to the ongoing War on Drugs campaign. He praised recent operations that led to the destruction of extensive poppy plantations, emphasising the government’s determination to shield youth from the grip of drugs. “We will continue these efforts relentlessly. As proud citizens of India, we will stand against all illegal activities and welcome any reasonable suggestions to improve our efforts,” Biren added.

The festival, described as timely and important, celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Manipur’s indigenous peoples and aimed to promote greater unity among communities. The festival will be concluded on December 14.
