Why is Meghalaya BJP Urging Aspirants for KHADC and JHADC Elections to Submit Applications by Dec 30?

The final list of candidates will be forwarded to the State Election Commission on January 5, 2025.

As Meghalaya is preparing for the upcoming Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections, the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called on all interested candidates to submit their applications to district presidents by December 30, 2024.

The final list of candidates will be forwarded to the State Election Commission on January 5, 2025.

Through these elections, the BJP hopes to attain a position whereby the party can influence the long pending amendments to the 6th Schedule; in a manner that will have a positive impact on the running of Meghalaya’s local administrations.

If successful in securing the requisite number of seats, the party plans to push for direct funding to village administrations.

This move is expected to empower village headmen and the Dorbar Shnongs (local governing bodies) across Khasi and Jaintia Hills, streamlining development projects and ensuring effective dissemination of Central government schemes aimed at improving lives across all communities.

The Meghalaya BJP looks forward to use the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) as platforms to deliver development directly to the people, bringing it to the doorsteps of every household in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.

The party believes that the ADCs offer a foundation to promote and preserve local traditions and administrative systems that have been successfully serving the region’s tribes for centuries.

By strengthening these heritages, customs, and conventions, the BJP aims to fulfil the aspirations of every citizen and pave the way for a prosperous future.

The Meghalaya Cabinet on Monday finalised the proposed schedule for the upcoming elections to the KHADC and JHADC.

The finalized schedule has been forwarded to Governor C.H. Vijayashankar, and the state now awaits his approval for the formal declaration of poll dates.

The elections to the KHADC and JHADC hold significant importance for the people of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, as the councils play a crucial role in managing local governance and preserving cultural heritage in the region.

The councils are responsible for administering key aspects of community life, including traditional customs, land management, and local development initiatives.
