He also wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in 2025, calling for unity in celebrating the rich culture and heritage of the Naga people.

The scenic Naga Heritage Village in Kisama witnessed a historic occasion as the first-ever Advent Christmas celebration took place on December 8, alongside the ongoing 25th edition of the Hornbill Festival.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said, “This celebration is not intended to dilute the Spirit of Christmas, but rather to showcase the connection between our spiritual identity, ethno-indigenous heritage, and political identity.”

Reflecting on the history of the Naga people, CM Rio pointed out the Naga political struggle and its importance in shaping the region’s identity. He spoke about the colonial era when British authorities imposed the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) of 1873, which introduced the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to limit movement into the North East and safeguard indigenous cultures and land rights.

“The ILP, initially aimed at restricting trade, played a crucial role in preserving our customs, traditions, and social laws,” Neiphiu Rio said. He also highlighted the recognition of Naga tribal dynamics post-independence and the special provisions under Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution, which ensures the protection of Naga customs, land ownership, and identity.

CM further said, “Let us remember the central figure of Christmas, our Savior, Lord Jesus Christ, who brought hope, peace, and salvation to the world.” He also wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in 2025, calling for unity in celebrating the rich culture and heritage of the Naga people.
