"I feel deeply ashamed. Is this the life you want to lead forever?," said Meekong Mossang.
In a deeply emotional and heartfelt appeal, a father of a NSCN (K-YA) cadre in Arunachal Pradesh has urged his son to shun the violent path of insurgency and return home.
Meekong Mossang, father of Thannong Mossang in a video message on Sunday tearfully pleaded with Thannong to stop extorting money from villagers, contractors, and local leaders in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
Meekong Mossang said that he has been enduring years of pain and poor health.
“You have to come back home by any means. Your mother and I are very old, and we might die any day now. For the past 2 to 3 years, I have been suffering, not knowing if I will survive another day. I feel like I am already dead. From now on, stop demanding money from the villagers. People think by demanding extortion and threatening people you are helping us with money, but you have not given us even a single rupee. How long will you keep living like this? I feel ashamed and angry. Please come home by any means and surrender,” said Meekong.
It might be mentioned that the insurgent group NSCN (K-YA) had served extortion letters to tea estate owners, contractors, businessmen, and villagers demanding money on the pretext of various ‘so-called taxes’.
According to sources, Thannong Mossang, a self-styled Major of the NSCN (K-YA) who recently visited some of the villages and distributed extortion notes to the villagers in the district, is leading the extortion drive on behalf of the outfit.
Villagers have been forced to pay Rs 500 as a ‘house tax’ and Rs 1,500 as ‘Indian tax,’ while tea estate owners are asked to pay Rs 5,000, LNT owners Rs 15,000, and JCB owners up to Rs 1 lakh annually.
According to sources, the group had set a target of collecting around Rs 30 crores from the region every year.
The extortion drive had created an atmosphere of terror in the area. However, the villagers are very scared to come up and complaints about this before the police and security forces.
