The organisation also pointed that Shukla blantatly disregarded the rich traditions and customs of the Hynñiewtrep people.
Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and requested to reject the Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prabha Shankar Shukla’s demand for extra security personnel.
This comes after the VC of Meghalaya’s NEHU, who is presently on leave, requested the Central government to provide adequate security to facilitate his return to the campus on December 2.
In a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, HITO on Sunday stated, “It has come to our attention that the Vice Chancellor has sought assistance from the Home Ministry to provide him with security personnel from the Central Armed Forces. He claims that the security measures currently in place, provided by the Meghalaya State Government, are insufficient for someone of his stature.”
“We wish to express our deep concerns over this request, which we believe lacks a valid foundation. The Central Armed Forces are entrusted with the vital role of safeguarding our nation’s integrity and should not be diverted for the exclusive use of one individual”, the organisation added.
The group added, “We fear that if Shukla is granted access to such significant manpower, he may misuse it to exert undue influence over students and faculty members, potentially using these forces to serve his personal agendas.”
They stated that the Vice Chancellor has repeatedly demonstrated a tendency toward arrogance and has misused his authoritative position on multiple occasions.
Furthermore, the organisation also pointed out that Shukla blatantly disregarded the rich traditions and customs of the Hynñiewtrep people.
“Shockingly he has openly defied a directive issued by the Mawlai Town Dorbar a body comprising of 17 Dorbar Shnong which has explicitly banned his entry into the University campus,” the HITO added.
The organisation exalted that decisions made by the Dorbar or Village Council carry immense significance and are considered ‘sacred and profoundly respected decisions made by “illigeble” Dorbar Shnong which are the apex decision making body for the Khasi race’.
“The Vice Chancellor forgets that it was the Mawlai Town Dorbar which has facilitated and provided allotment of Land for the establishment of this Central University, however the actions in this regard represent a grave insult and an open challenge to our community and our way of life,” organization stated.
“It is also important to highlight that the Hynñiewtrep people have a unique and complex historical narrative concerning the Instrument of Accession with the Khasi States a a national solemn commitment that remains unresolved even after more than seven decades which has caused non-stop constitutional legislative conflicts with the indigenous Judicial Executive and Legislative rights of the Hynniewtrep people. Our community deeply values its dignity and cultural heritage, and we earnestly request your attention and support in addressing our concerns,” it said.
