Mizoram is witnessing a growing humanitarian challenge as over 33,712 refugees from Myanmar, displaced by ongoing turmoil, seek shelter and stability.

The refugees, comprising 10,119 males and 10,782 females, face an uncertain future as they grapple with economic instability and the desire to return home while the crisis in Myanmar continues unabated. Their struggle extends to providing for their families, securing education for their children, and finding sustainable sources of income.

Authorities report that 12,811 of the refugees are minors, with Champhai district hosting the highest number of displaced individuals 13,966 in total, including 5,232 children.

Despite the challenges, some refugee families have managed to enroll their children in private schools, while others rely on government institutions. Makeshift schools have also emerged in camps with large numbers of children, ensuring access to basic education.

At the Sihhmui Refugee Camp, home to approximately 800 people, 251 children are enrolled in classes ranging from nursery to grade 12. These classes are primarily conducted in Burmese, with some teachers continuing their educational roles despite being displaced themselves.

The Central Young Mizo Association, a key support system, has extended its assistance to refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh, as well as internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Manipur. The association continues to play an important role in providing aid, coordinating educational initiatives, and offering hope to those displaced by conflict.
