Minister Rakkam A Sangma said winning the Tura Lok Sabha seat was a miracle for Congress.
Meghalaya Minister and NPP leader, Rakkam A. Sangma, has hinted at potential changes in the state’s political dynamics following the results of the Gambegre by-election, et to be announced tomorrow.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Minister Sangma expressed doubt about a revival of the Congress party in the state, suggesting that the party could face significant challenges in reviving its influence.
“I don’t expect Congress to regain its former strength, but we will discuss this after the results on November 23. The political dimension in Meghalaya might change in the state, but Congress will have a very difficult time to revive,” said Minister Rakkam A Sangma.
The Minister expressed doubt on Congress’ performance in the state, particularly pointing to the party’s poor showing in Shillong in the recently held Lok Sabha elections.
He said winning the Tura Lok Sabha seat was a miracle for Congress. If they could win in Tura, why could not they win in Shillong as well?
The performance in Shillong has not been encouraging, the Minister added.
The NPP leader further criticised the Congress party’s recent political maneuvers, particularly its surprising support for the BJP-backed candidate in the MP elections.
He said that Congress’ victory in Tura Lok Sabha seat was not due to the inherent strength or effectiveness of the party itself, but perhaps due to external factors or circumstances.
“Congress party, is very unique in history in the political history of the country. But backing the BJP candidate in the MP election was a surprising move. That was a big story for each one and very surprising to everyone. Congress won the election, but it was not because the party’s strength,” he added.
The result of the by-polls to the Gambegre Assembly seat will be declared tomorrow.
Candidates vying for the seat include Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s wife, Mehtab Chandee Sangma of the National People’s Party (NPP); Jingjang M. Marak from Congress; Sadhiarani M. Sangma of the TMC; Bernard N. Marak of the BJP; and independents Sengkrabirth Marak and Jerry A. Sangma.
In Gambegre, the by-election was necessitated after former MLA Saleng A. Sangma got elected to the Lok Sabha.
