Manipur Police informed that 7 more persons have been arrested for their involvement in attacking the residences of ministers and MLAs.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has once again vowed stern action against those who were involved in attacks on the residence of ministers and MLAs on November 16 following the escalation in the situation after the Jiribam killings.
“Those who are genuinely agitating against the killings of innocent people are genuine, we support their movement and agitation because everyone has the right to democratically agitate. But in the name of the democratic movement, some gangs have looted, burned ministers’ houses and looted their properties. So, we have already initiated appropriate legal action. We have already who’s who identified through CCTV and I feel shame to express publically that this is happening in Manipur and looting is taking place in the name of agitation. This is a matter of shame. We will take legal action,” CM Singh told news agency ANI.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Police in a post on X has informed that 7 more persons have been arrested for their involvement in attacking the residences of ministers and MLAs. Prior to this 25 persons were already arrested for being involved in such actions.
On November 18, Angry mobs attacked and vandalized the residences of several MLAs, including that of Chief Minister N. Biren’s son-in-law and Sagolband MLA RK Imo. Among other targeted were Dr. Sapam Ranjan, Health and Public Relations Minister and Konthoujam MLA, Thongam Biswajit, Power Minister and Thongju MLA, K Govindas, PWD Minister and Bishnupur MLA, Nishikant Sapam, Keishamthong MLA, Thangjam Arun Kumar, Wangkhei MLA, Sapam Kunjakeswar, Patsoi MLA, Khwairakpam Raghumani, Uripok MLA, Soraisham Kebi Devi, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA, Khumukcham Joykisan, Thangmeiband MLA, Kongkham Robindro, Mayang Imphal MLA. CM Biren Singh’s residence at Luwangsangbam near the Koirangei army camp was also attacked.
Their homes were ransacked, and properties were set ablaze by irate mobs. Flag marches by the Army and security forces were conducted in Imphal city to restore a semblance of order.
It needs to be mentioned that violence erupted in Jiribam on November 7 and peaked on November 11 in the Borobekra sub-division of Jiribam district, where armed miscreants attacked a relief camp and CRPF posts and abducted three women and three children who were later found dead.
