A tragic, heart breaking incident has been reported from Assam’s Nagaon. A young man, owner of a broiler chicken farm, beat to death a female dog in front of her puppies just because the lactating dog killed and ate a chicken from his firm.
The dog was desperate for food after giving birth to five puppies, and she ventured into the broiler farm and ate a chicken. This simple act of survival led to the youth, Divyajyoti Saikia alias Dadul Nath, brutally beating the dog to death.
What followed next was even more heart-wrenching, as the dog’s puppies were seen wandering around her lifeless body, their cries of hunger and despair, sad and unbearable.
This shocking act prompted local women to stage a protest, demanding action against Saikia. Their demand highlights an important aspect of our legal system: under Section 428 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), causing harm to animals is a punishable offence, with a maximum penalty of two years in prison. It is crucial to ensure such laws are enforced to prevent such heinous acts from becoming commonplace.
Earlier yesterday, a tiger seeking shelter was mercilessly attacked by villagers wielding stones and sharp objects. The assault left the tiger with severe injuries, including haemorrhages, brain damage, and complete blindness in one eye. The viral video of this attack has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for justice for the national animal.
Currently, the tiger is under critical care at the Kaziranga Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre. Due to his permanent loss of vision and injuries, he may never return to the wild and could be moved to the Assam Zoo. This tragic scenario highlights the urgent need for awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and the enforcement of stringent penalties for those who harm protected animals.
These incidents serve as stark reminders that animals, like humans, experience pain, love, and loss. Society must understand that compassion extends beyond humans, and cruelty towards animals reflects a deep moral failing. It is time for stronger action to protect the voiceless and ensure a harmonious coexistence with nature.
