Ragging Horror: Medical Student Dies After Being Made to Stand for Hours

This incident, which has shaken Gujarat, is a grim reminder of the persistence of ragging in educational institutions.
The death of Anil Methania, an 18-year-old first-year medical student from GMERS Medical College in Dharpur Patan, Gujarat, has reignited the debate on ragging in educational institutions. Anil allegedly collapsed after being made to stand for three hours as part of a ragging “introduction” session by third-year students. Despite being hospitalized and recording a statement with the police, Anil tragically passed away.
This incident, which has shaken Gujarat, is a grim reminder of the persistence of ragging in educational institutions. According to NDTV reports, Hardik Shah, the dean of the medical college, said, “As soon as we came to know that he had collapsed, we hospitalised him. He told police that he was ragged and made to stand for three hours. We have informed the cops and the family and will try to take strict action.”
Senior police officer KK Pandya said the student’s father had filed a complaint and a case of accidental death had been registered. “The autopsy has been conducted and the medical report has been asked to submit a report on the incident. Based on the findings, we will take further action,” he said. Asked about the ragging angle, the senior officer said, “We have asked for detailed information from the college on this point too.” News agency PTI later reported that 15 senior students have been named in the FIR.
A similar case of ragging has also been reported from Tripura Medical College (TMC) on October, where 18 first-year students were accused of ragging their peers. The TMC Principal, Dr. Arindam Datta, lodged an FIR under Section 4 of the Tripura Educational Institution (Prevention of Ragging) Rules after a student, Roopesh Kumar Jha, filed a complaint.
During the inquiry, two students, Ayubir Debbarma and Samplai Debbarma, allegedly insulted and abused Dr. Datta. All 18 accused students were suspended and fined Rs. 10 lakhs collectively. Notices have also been issued by Amtoli Police, with warnings of arrest for non-compliance.
Ragging remains a serious issue across India, despite strict anti-ragging measures enforced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Medical Commission (NMC). These back-to-back incidents underline the urgent need for stronger enforcement, awareness campaigns, and zero-tolerance policies to protect students from harassment and ensure a safe learning environment.
