The expedition, which took place from October 19 to November 5, 2024, focused on assessing the risk posed by the state's vulnerable lakes.

The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), addressed a press conference on Friday and spoke about the successful completion of an expedition to South Lhonak and Shako Chu Lake. The expedition, which took place from October 19 to November 5, 2024, focused on assessing the risk posed by the state’s vulnerable lakes.

Namrata Thapa, Secretary cum Relief Commissioner of the Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department, highlighted that this initiative was a first of its kind for both Sikkim and India. During the expedition, nine of the 16 identified at-risk lakes across Lachen, Lachung, and West Sikkim were examined.

The expedition also included training for local communities on using and maintaining monitoring equipment. Following the flash floods from these lakes, mitigation strategies are being developed, and standard operating procedures are being established to guide future response efforts.

Pierre-Yves Pitteloud of SDC praised Sikkim’s proactive disaster management efforts and reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to supporting the state.
