Assam have been marred by a series of tragic road accidents during the Diwali celebrations, claiming four lives and injuring 14 people within 48 hours.

The latest incident occurred on Kanaklata Road near the Saukuchi Cycle Track in Guwahati, where a head-on collision between an auto-rickshaw and a pickup truck left six people injured, including three minors. Eyewitnesses reported that after the collision, the driver of the pickup truck attempted to flee but lost control and crashed into a concrete pillar, dying on the spot.

The auto-rickshaw involved was brand new, having just been taken out of the showroom earlier that day. All the injured were swiftly taken to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital for treatment.

Adding to the series of accidents, three individuals were injured in Eastern Assam’s Sivasagar district when their two-wheeler was hit by a speeding vehicle. All three were admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, in a tragic incident in Sonai, Cachar district, a young man lost his life while trying to elope with his girlfriend. The youth, identified as Sanjit Rabidas, was riding a motorcycle with his girlfriend and her friend seated as pillion passengers when he collided with a bridge divider. Sanjit died at the scene, and both the girlfriend and her friend were seriously injured. Notably, Sanjit had attempted to elope with the minor girl the previous week but had been stopped by the police and the girl returned to her guardians. This second attempt turned fatal.

This accident followed another fatal collision in Guwahati a day earlier, when two speeding SUVs crashed in Khanapara. The incident claimed the lives of Deepit Dey and Kanamika Narzary, while two other individuals were injured. A woman named Neha Basumatary narrowly escaped with minor injuries and was discharged after treatment. The driver of the second SUV also sustained injuries.
