Assam: Inquiry Commission Probing Gorukhuti Eviction Violence Submits 319 Page Report With 16 Recommendations

The one-man inquiry commission formed by the Assam government to investigate the violence during the eviction drive in the Gorukhuti in Darrang district on September 2021 that left two dead and several injured has submitted its report to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today.
Headed by retired High Court judge BD Agarwal, the commission’s report comprises 319 pages and includes 16 key recommendations, said a statement of the inquiry commission.
Throughout the inquiry, the commission received 55 memorandums and cross-examined 44 witnesses.
However, the specifics of the recommendations and the report’s contents have not been disclosed.
What happened during the Gorukhuti Eviction Drive in 2021?
The eviction drive began on September 20, 2021, targeting families that had settled on government land for decades.
In the first phase, around 788 families and 48 shops were removed. During the second phase, violence erupted, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals, including a 12-year-old boy who was returning home from the local post office after collecting his Aadhaar card.
The violence left over 20 people injured, including police personnel. In total, around 1,200-1,400 houses primarily belonging to Bengali-speaking Muslims, were demolished in the Dhalpur I, II, and III villages, displacing more than 7,000 residents.
The report’s submission marks a crucial step in addressing the circumstances of that day and informing future actions related to eviction drives.
