6 Disputed Areas Resolved, 6 More Under Discussion: Meghalaya CM on Its Border Issue With Assam

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma reiterated that while some areas are easier to resolve, others remain more complicated.
In light of the ongoing border dispute with Assam, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has emphasized that the matter is being closely monitored in collaboration with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
During a podcast in ANI, CM Sangma highlighted the progress made, noting that 6 of the 12 disputed areas have been resolved, while discussions continue on the rest 6 disputed areas.
CM Sangma traced the roots of the dispute back to the early 1970s, when the process of statehood led to unclear geographical boundaries. This lack of clarity resulted in conflicts between the two states.
He referenced a report drafted in 2011-2012 that identified 12 areas of difference, which both state governments had officially approved.
The Chief Minister reiterated that while some areas are easier to resolve, others remain more complicated.
“We are working closely together, engaging in both formal and informal discussions to find a way forward,” said CM Sangma.
CM Sangma said, “This cannot go on forever. For the last 25 to 30 years, there have been 26 meetings of chief ministers, yet decisions have only led to maintaining the status quo.”
He emphasised the need for a decisive approach.
“We cannot stick to the status quo anymore. Politically it’s very tough for us to take this issue up because a lot of blame comes to me, but as a leader I realised that somebody has to take the bull by the horn and say let’s find a solution to this because this can’t continue,” said CM Sangma.
