CM Sangma announced financial aid of Rs 1.30 lakh for houses that were fully destroyed and additional assistance for partially damaged homes
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited Purakhasia on Thursday to assess the damage caused by the recent floods and met the affected residents.
Speaking at a public gathering at Purakhasia Block Complex, Sangma stated that his visit aimed to hear the people’s concerns and determine how the government and administration could provide relief. He thanked the administration, Block Development Officers (BDOs), and line department officials for their swift response during the crisis.
CM Sangma announced financial aid of Rs 1.30 lakh for houses that were fully destroyed and additional assistance for partially damaged homes, depending on the extent of damage.
He also assured compensation for losses to plantation crops, fishery ponds, and livestock, based on the report submitted by the Deputy Commissioner.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak presented a report detailing the number of affected households and the distribution of relief materials. The Chief Minister urged any households that had not yet received assistance to contact their VEC secretaries or BDOs directly to ensure timely relief.
Addressing concerns raised by the public, Sangma advised officials to be flexible in providing assistance, emphasizing the need for immediate support during such difficult times. He directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to make temporary repairs to damaged bridges, allowing small vehicles to pass, and urged the Water Resources Department to construct short-term protection walls for damaged irrigation canals. He assured that funds for these repairs, as well as for damaged schools, would be sanctioned promptly from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The Chief Minister later inspected the flood-damaged Batua Bazar and the bridge at Balijora before proceeding to other affected areas in West Garo Hills.
