Heatwave Claims 2 More Lives in Assam, Death toll Rises to 3 in Two Days

The ongoing heatwave in Assam has claimed two more lives in Jorhat today taking the toll due to extreme heat to 3.

A beggar and a tea garden worker, both of whom collapsed on the footpath near the HRH The Prince of Wales Institute of Engineering and Technology, Jorhat died because of the soaring mercury.

Their bodies have been sent to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.

Meanwhile, as many as 25 tea garden workers have fainted due to the extreme heat in Moran. Later, they were shifted to a nearby hospital.

Yesterday, a young man identified as Jeevankant Pegu, a resident of Dergaon in Golaghat, died due to the extreme heat.

He lost consciousness while walking near the Dergaon ASTC bus stand and was later declared dead at a hospital.

The entire Northeast has been reeling under intense heat over the past few days, with maximum temperatures surging by 5 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal, reaching highs of up to 38°Celsius.

Conditions are expected to remain the same in the coming days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this heatwave is attributed to a combination of deficit rainfall, changing wind patterns, and reduced cloud cover, causing severe discomfort for residents across the region.

Today, temperatures in various parts of Assam were recorded between 36°C and 39°C. Schools in Kamrup Metro have been shut from tomorrow till September 27.
