Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, lauded the steps taken by the Traffic Control Police Wing and District Police in a post on his official Facebook page. He also warned that legal action would be taken against any school transport service that fails to comply with the safety guidelines, underscoring the government’s commitment to student safety.
In a move to enhance the safety of students commuting in school vehicles, the Transport Department of Manipur, issued a strict advisory regarding the maximum number of students allowed in such vehicles, along with other safety conditions on 2015. This initiative comes amid rising concerns about overcrowded school transportation, which poses significant risks to students’ safety.
On a press release of Traffic Control Police said, Overloading vehicles beyond their registered capacity not only violates the law but also heightens the risk of accidents, especially in the event of sudden braking or collisions. The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (SCORS) has also taken serious note of this issue.
The Traffic Control Police Wing emphasized that schools and school vehicle operators must strictly adhere to the prescribed limits, which are set at 1.5 times the vehicle’s registered seating capacity, as outlined in the Transport Department’s guidelines. They will take action under Section 194A of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, against drivers who violate these rules.
The press release reiterated that ensuring the safety of school students is a top priority, and collective efforts from schools, vehicle operators, and authorities are essential to prevent accidents and safeguard the well-being of future generations.
