Assam Eviction Row: AJP Accuses Govt of Bias and Creating Communal Tension Between Communities

Earlier, Congress and AIUDF have also extended support to the encroachers in Kasutoli in Sonapur.
Politics over the eviction drive row in Kasutoli in Sonapur near Guwahati continues unabated. After Congress, AIUDF and Raijor Dal, now the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) have extended its support to the illegal encroachers.
AJP chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi today visited Kasutoli and announced that people of a particular community are being targeted in these areas in the name of eviction in tribal block lands.
Gogoi accused the government of giving the eviction drive a communal tone.
“If illegal encroachments are to be removed, the process must be conducted strictly according to the law, without any form of class or caste discrimination,” said Gogoi.
He also highlighted what he described as an inconsistency in the eviction drive, pointing to Paroguma Village (Home to Bengali-speaking Muslims) in the Tribal Blocks and Belts at Kasutoli, which has reportedly been spared from such actions.
He said, “Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma could not dare to conduct evictions there. He selectively targeted areas to create communal discord between Hindu and Muslim communities.”
In a recent violence that broke out at the eviction site on Thursday night amid the eviction drive to free tribal land from illegal settlers, 2 people were killed and 22 police personnel and 7 civilians were injured.
The violence erupted after scores of illegal encroachers attacked police personnel and government officials armed with sticks, stones and machetes in hand.
Despite the violence, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the government will continue its crackdown on encroachment in land under Tribal Blocks and Belts at Kosutoli.
Yesterday, CM Sarma said that the presence of illegal migrants, and some unwanted elements in the Tribal belts are posing a great threat to the identity and existence of the tribal people.
Assam government will take strong action to protect tribals and safeguard their identity, culture and heritage.
