With an aim to boost tourism in strife-torn Manipur, Minister of Public Health Engineering Department, Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, visited the Loktak Lake on Monday to oversee the ongoing cleaning work. Minister Susindro heads the Cabinet sub-committee set up to clean-up the Lake, keep it free of encroachments and develop it as a tourist hotspot.

Acting under the directives of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, the Loktak Development Authority has been actively removing illegal structures, phumdis (floating organic masses of vegetation and decaying matter), and athaphums (fishing rings) from the lake to safeguard and restore its fragile ecosystem.

Speaking to the media, Minister Susindro said that the primary goal of the sub-committee is to demarcate the lake from surrounding settlement areas by constructing a ring road around its periphery.

Once the demarcation is complete, his department will address the siltation issue, starting from Moirang to the Loktak Project Power Channel in Bishnupur district, to ensure the lake remains clean.

Minister Susindro also stated that the clean-up and siltation work will not only improve the lake’s ecological health but also boost tourism and benefit local fishermen.

An amount of Rs 15 crore was sanctioned under the Loktak Livelihood Mission initiated in 2018 to clean the swampy areas of the lake and its better upkeep.
