The CSOs have warned of further protests if their demands are not met. Over 3,000 residents of Baghmara took to the streets in support of their twin demands
In a significant move, civil society organisations (CSOs) of South Garo Hills in Meghalaya have issued a 20-day ultimatum to the government, demanding immediate and substantial action on the two-laning of National Highway-127 B and essential repairs of the highway.
The CSOs have warned of further protests if their demands are not met.
Over 3,000 residents of Baghmara took to the streets in support of their twin demands.
The residents advocated for the expedited completion of the NH 127 B two-lane project and significant repairs to the deteriorated road conditions.
The demonstration was organised by various civil society groups, including the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), A’chik Democratic Ensemble (ADE), A’chik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO), and others.
The CSOs have organised rallies previously as well, demanding the urgent and immediate repair of the national highway.
The earlier demonstrations took place in Karukol and Gasuapara, aiming to highlight the urgent need for improved road infrastructure.
It is worth mentioning here that NH 127 B, formerly known as NH 62, spans over 170 kilometres, linking Dudhnoi in Assam’s Goalpara district to Dalu in West Garo Hills. The route traverses North, East, and South Garo Hills before connecting with NH 51 at Karongre.
While the first 90 kilometres of the highway are relatively in better condition, the remaining 80 kilometres have been described as being in a dire state, severely affecting the connectivity of the region.
