Meghalaya: Around 800 Vehicles Fined For Using Tinted Glasses
First Published: 18th August, 2024 17:20 IST
According to Indian laws, car windows must have a minimum visibility of 70 % for rear and front glasses and 50 % for side glasses.
In a proactive move to enhance road safety and enforce legal regulations, the East Khasi Hills District Police in Meghalaya conducted a special drive against the use of tinted glass on car windows.
During the drive, approximately 800 vehicles were found violating the ban.
Police not only fined the vehicle owners for flouting rules but also removed the tinted glasses and compounded them in alignment with the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and Supreme Court directives, said East Khai Hills SP Sylvester.
The usage of tinted glasses on vehicles was banned in India by the Supreme Court in 2012 to reduce the excessive number of crimes committed in moving cars and to ensure the safety of both citizens and passengers.
According to Indian laws, car windows must have a minimum visibility of 70 % for rear and front glasses and 50 % for side glasses.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, SP Sylvester said that police have initiated round-the-clock checks at designated Nakas across the region to strengthen road safety and prevent criminal activities.
He said that drivers found violating the prohibition on tinted windows will face penalties as stipulated by the legal framework, reinforcing the district’s commitment to a safer and more secure driving environment.
