Rio reaffirmed his government's commitment to the all-round development of Nagaland, particularly emphasizing the need for additional support for the Eastern Region of the state to bridge existing gaps
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his Independence Day speech today spoke about the Government’s open door policy to address issues raised by the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) and also expressed optimism regarding positive outcome on the Naga peace talks.
Rio reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the all-round development of Nagaland, particularly emphasizing the need for additional support for the Eastern Region of the state to bridge existing gaps in both physical infrastructure and human capital. He assured that the government maintains an open-door policy for addressing the issues raised by the ENPO.
Addressing the long-standing Naga political issue, Rio expressed optimism for an early resolution, citing the continuity in the central government as a positive factor. He mentioned that the Political Affairs Committee, which includes the entire Cabinet and elected members from tribes not represented in the Cabinet, has already held its first meeting. Rio also emphasized the importance of joint consultations with civil society organizations and Tribal Hohos through the Forum of Political Consultative Committee, based on the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position, to achieve a lasting solution.
He also highlighted the successful conduct of the state’s first-ever Urban Local Body (ULB) elections with reservations for women, during the Independence Day speech that underlined his government’s achievements and ongoing commitments. Rio stressed that this landmark election brought together all sections of society and was carried out under strengthened laws and a bolstered State Election Commission. He highlighted that there is 37% women representation in the elected town and municipal councils, exceeding the legally mandated 33% quota.
Rio concluded his address by reiterating his confidence that the shared history, culture, and commitment to equitable development will guide Nagaland toward progress and prosperity.
