Ruling BJP Sweeps Panchayat Elections In Tripura

The BJP had won 4,806 (70 per cent) of the total of 6,909 seats unopposed in the gram panchayats, panchayat samitis, and zilla parishads
The three-tier panchayat elections was swept by the ruling BJP in Tripura on Tuesday. The saffron party secured most of the seats in the zilla parishads, panchayat samitis, and gram panchayats.
The party won 407 panchayat samiti seats with a winning percentage of 96.21%.
As per information shared by CM Manik Saha, the BJP has won in all eight Zila Parishads with a winning percentage of 97.41%.
In the panchayat samitis, Congress won in eight seats, CPI (M) bagged six seats while a single Independent candidate emerged victorious.
The INDI alliance could win only 3 Zila Parishad seats. Out of these, Congress has won in two seats and CPI (M) emerged victorious in one seat.
Opposition CPI (M) and Congress parties won 138 gram panchayat seats each, BJP’s ruling alliance partner TIPRA Motha, which contested separately this year, opened its account in local bodies outside the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and won in 102 seats while Independent candidates emerged victorious in 20 seats.
Out of the 1,819 gram panchayat seats that had finally gone to polls, BJP won in 1,474. The CPI (M) won in 149, Congress won in 150, TIPRA Motha won in 24 seats and 20 Independent candidates emerged victorious too.
Congratulating the BJP on its victory, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said the results reflected people’s faith in the party and on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
It is worth mentioning that the BJP had won 71 per cent of the total gram panchayat seats uncontested prior to the polling day. The saffron party has also bagged 68 per cent of the seats in the panchayat samitis and 17 per cent seats of the zilla parishad bodies uncontested.
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), before the August 8 elections, the BJP had won 4,806 (70 per cent) of the total of 6,909 seats unopposed in the gram panchayats, panchayat samitis, and zilla parishads following which elections were held in 1,819 seats in 606 gram panchayats, 188 seats in 35 panchayat samitis, and 96 seats in eight zilla parishads.
In all, 4,761 candidates representing different political parties contested the elections in eight districts, excluding the areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), where village committee (equivalent to gram panchayats) elections will be held later.
Meanwhile, CM Manik Saha also hit out at the opposition for allegedly trying to create confusion among the people.
