Sikkim-Registered Vehicle Mows Down 7 Kanwariyas In West Bengal

In a tragic incident, 7 Kanwariyas (devotees of Lord Shiva) were killed and several others injured when a Sikkim-registered Scorpio ran over them in West Bengal.

The incident occurred this morning near Bagdogra, West Bengal, while they were on their way to Junglee Baba Mandir to fetch water from a river and pour it on the Shiva linga on the third Monday of the holy month of Shravan, a day of particular significance to Shiva devotees.

According to eyewitnesses, the group of Kanwariyas was walking along the side of the road when the speeding Scorpio veered off the road and ran over them.

The occupants of the Scorpio were also injured in the accident.

All injured have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, locals have blocked the road and police and fire brigade officers are at the scene to carry out rescue and relief operations.

Identifications of the deceased persons are yet to be ascertained.

Investigation into the matter is underway. Further details are awaited.

Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has offered his condolences to the families of the deceased persons.

Bista said that rescue operations are underway and efforts are being made to provide the best possible treatment for the injured.

“I share my deepest condolences to the families of Kawadiyas who were struck by a speeding vehicle near Muni T.E, Haskhawa earlier today The local administration and police officials are on the spot, and rescue and relief work is being carried out. I am in touch with the administrative officials, and we will do everything to ensure the best possible treatment for those injured. May God grant strength to the families to over come this terrible tragedy. I am praying for the early recovery of those injured,” Bista wrote in his condolence message.
