Tripura: Voting For Panchayat Elections Underway

The ruling BJP secures a massive victory in the Tripura Panchayat elections, clinching 71% of gram panchayat seats uncontested

Voting is underway for the Tripura Panchayat elections, with polling having commenced at 7 AM and is scheduled to conclude at 4 PM. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already secured a majority of the gram panchayat seats uncontested, marking a significant early triumph.

Out of the 6,370 seats in the gram panchayat bodies, the BJP has won 4,550 seats without opposition, translating to over 71% of the total seats. The remaining 1,819 seats are set for a contested battle. In these, the BJP has fielded candidates in 1,818 seats, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPIM has 1,222 candidates. The Congress is contesting 731 seats, TIPRA Motha 138, with several independent candidates also in the fray. Notably, one seat in the Dukli gram panchayat remains vacant.

In the Panchayat Samiti elections too, out of 423 seats, the BJP won 244 seats uncontested.

In the Zila Parishad bodies, 20 out of 116 seats were won uncontested by the BJP, leaving 96 seats up for grabs. The BJP has candidates in all 96 seats, CPIM in 81, Congress in 76, TIPRA Motha in 2, and there are seven independent candidates.

Overall, the elections will see 8,998 candidates from various political factions competing for Gram Panchayat positions, 783 for Panchayat Samiti seats, and 384 for Zila Parishad seats.

To ensure a secure voting environment, the state police will be supported by 30 companies of paramilitary forces to maintain law and order during the elections.

Earlier in the 2019 Gram Panchayat elections, the BJP had secured 96 percent of the seats uncontested.
