Sikkim Assembly Passes Bill to Ensure Better Services to Tourists

The bill aims to make sure that the stakeholders follow the principles of sustainable tourism, behave responsibly toward the environment.

The Sikkim Assembly on Tuesday passed the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Bill, 2024, which seeks to enhance the quality of services to tourists visiting the state.

The legislation was introduced by Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Tshering Thendup Bhutia.

According to Minister Bhutia, the bill is designed to ensure that all stakeholders adhere to standards that promote safety, quality, and ethical practices. By implementing these measures, the government hopes to enhance service delivery by tour operators and solidify Sikkim’s reputation as one of India’s top tourist destinations.

He stated that in addition to drafting important policies for responsible tourism and required behaviour for travellers, stakeholders, and visitors, the law also proposes fines for breaking its provisions and the rules that would be enacted.

The bill also aims to make sure that the stakeholders follow the principles of sustainable tourism, behave responsibly toward the environment, and show a commitment to community development.

The Minister said that it will also empower the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, and restructure it.

The Assembly also passed the Sikkim Court Fees and Stamps on Documents (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seeks to introduce e-stamping.

The 4-day Sikkim Legislative Assembly Budget Session 2024-25 began on Monday.
