Village is facing an imminent threat to life and property, prompting the District Administration to urge residents to exercise extreme caution
The situation in Naga Village in North Sikkim has become critical due to the devastating impact of glacial lake outburst floods, landslides, and heavy rainfall.
The village faces an imminent threat to life and property, prompting the District Administration to urge residents to exercise extreme caution and consider migrating to safer areas until the monsoon season passes or repairs are completed.
Many houses have been affected, and the damaged infrastructure and sinking roads pose significant challenges for residents relying solely on Naga for their livelihood.
Those with alternative accommodations outside Naga are relocating, but others are still looking for safe options.
“Around 50 families have been shifted to safety from here. We need to shift another 50 families. Around 300 families reside here,” said a local speaking to Northeast Live.
“This road, which is close to the border, has been damaged beyond repair. GREF is constructing an alternate route; however, the construction is progressing at a slow pace,” the resident added.
Speaking to Northeast Live, another local who has lost his house and shop in landslides said, “Everyone has suffered loss due to the massive landslides. I used to run a grocery store here, which I lost in the landslide. A few other shops also existed nearby, now buried under the soil.”
“The devastation started when Sikkim was hit by GLOF last year. The entire place is sinking, and we are not safe anywhere here,” the local added.
The authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and affected residents are advised to heed safety advice and explore alternative routes when traveling to North Sikkim.
Travelers are also forced to take alternative routes due to the sinking roads.
