HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said that the organisation has always been firm about its demand for the implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) in the state
Despite Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma urging the pressure groups in the state to not go ahead with the checking of work permits of migrant labourers in the state, the Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) today made it clear that they will continue checking the papers of those who enter the state in search of work without valid documents.
Speaking to Northeast Live, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said that the organisation has always been firm with its demand for the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.
“HYC has always made a demand that the state should implement ILP. If in case the IPL implementation is not possible, then the government should at least implement that MRSSA Amendment Bill, 2020. Moreover, it was the effort of HYC, which forced the government to introduce the new labour law in 2020, under which every inter-state labourer has to register with the government,” Synrem added.
Meanwhile, stressing on the need to implement these laws , Synrem spoke about the Ri Bhoi incident where a factory own by non tribal is running without a valid licence from Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
He said after an altercation with the owner, and the manager and all the staff of that company, the members of HYC had close down the factory on that day itself.
While stating that the organisation is not against development, Roy Kupar Synrem although it is the concern of the government to do the work but in absence of that, the pressure groups have to take up the responsibility.
When asked with migrant labourers moving out is hampering the development of the state, Synrem said the organisations are not against development but they are concerned with people coming from outside under the disguise of labourers and business man and get settled in Meghalaya and change the political and demographic structure of the state, which will push the indigenous population towards minority.
It may be mentioned here that as many as 10 FIRs were filed by the police against the pressure groups, including the Khasi Students’ Union, for checking the papers of labourers coming to the state.
As per reports, around 2,500 migrant labourers have been forced to leave the state after the pressure groups’ crackdown on migrant workers.
