In a welcome relief for the people of Sikkim, authorities have reopened the Algarah-Lava road to light vehicular traffic after closing it on July 11 for repair work.

NH-10, considered Sikkim’s lifeline, has remained closed for the past 16 days due to landslides affecting several sections.

Though the alternate route is now accessible to light vehicles, it will require another couple of days before heavy vehicles can ply on it.

As per reports, heavy vehicles carrying essetial commodities still cannot use the alternate route as it is newly laid road. It will take another couple of days before heavy vehicles can use it.

Meanwhile, the repair work of NH-10 is also going on in full swing, which has been slowed down a bit due to inclement weather.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang recently said that the tourism sector has taken a major hit because of the closure of NH-10.

It may be mentioned here that the prices of essential commodities in Sikkim have steeply risen because of the closure of NH-10. Items costing Rs 10 in Siliguri are currently being sold for around Rs 70 in Sikkim.
