Assam: Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue Removed to Build Clock Tower, Locals Protest

Doomdooma BJP MLA Rupesh Gowala assured that a new, taller statue measuring 6.5 feet in height, would be erected at the original site

Locals of Doomdooma town in Assam’s Tinsukia district are furious over the removal of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi to make way for a Clock Tower. The 5.5-foot-tall statue, which had stood at Gandhi Chowk for several years, was taken down using an excavator crane on July 10, sparking protests among residents.

Durga Bhumij, former Congress MLA of Doomdooma, led the opposition against the statue’s removal and expressed disappointment.

“The Clock Tower should not replace Mahatma Gandhi’s statue. They can build the Clock Tower elsewhere, but Mahatma Gandhi’s statue must remain in its original place. Relocating the statue is an insult to Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy. This decision has hurt the sentiments of the people,” Bhumij said.

Responding to the widespread public outcry, Doomdooma BJP MLA Rupesh Gowala assured residents on Thursday that a new, taller statue of Mahatma Gandhi, measuring 6.5 feet in height, would be erected at the original site within six months.

He emphasised plans to clear the area of unsightly structures, including electricity transformers, overhead wires, and light poles, which previously marred the statue’s surroundings.

However, despite assurances of a new statue, locals persist about the coexistence of the Clock Tower and Gandhi’s statue. Many argue against placing Gandhi’s statue beneath the Clock Tower, a structure symbolizing British colonial heritage.

“Mahatma Gandhi led India’s freedom struggle against British rule. His statue should not be overshadowed by a Clock Tower that represents colonial history. Preserving our heritage and honouring our great leaders is crucial,” said a resident.
