New plant species ‘Petrocosmea arunachalense’ discovered in Arunachal

The new species of plant was discovered by a team of researchers in the Mandala region of West Kameng district.

A new species of plant namely Petrocosmea arunachalense has been discovered in Arunachal Pradesh.

The new species of plant was discovered by a team of researchers from the Botanical Survey of India’s Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre  (APRC) in the Mandala region of West Kameng district.

The research team was led by Dr Krishna Chowlu, along with researchers Akshath Shenoy and Ajit Ray from APRC, Itanagar.

Petrocosmea arunachalense, belongs to the Gesneriaceae family.

It is unique as it is the second species of the genus Petrocosmea to be discovered in India.

It is expected that the discovery of Petrocosmea arunachalense will draw significant attention from botanists and researchers worldwide, solidifying Arunachal Pradesh’s status as a vital region for botanical study and preservation.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to X and congratulated the research team for the discovery.

“The rich flora of our State never fails to amaze us! Congratulations to the researchers from Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre of @bsi_moefcc on discovery of a new plant species named Petrocosmea arunachalense. Belonging to the family Gesneriaceae, this is only the second known species of the genus Petrocosmea found in the country. Let us keep preserving the hidden treasures of nature,” CM Khandu posted on X.
